I had to do it
When people in downtown Manhattan jokingly refer to their borough’s northern reaches as “upstate

Fort Tryon Park is best known as home to the Cloisters

Armed with my Metrocard, house keys

Across the street in a playground

I ran into the park, but instead of taking a main path toward the Cloisters

As I ran I was faced with options: this path or that

I passed stone archways and lush areas with names like Abby’s Lawn and Alpine Garden

But then, on the east side of the park around 196th Street, there they were: a set of stairs, set along a rock formation and marking the beginning of a series of steep inclines
